Game (possibly) getting targeted with 1 star reviews

Postby gfactoriser » Mon Dec 16, 2013 1:34 am

Hi all

I've had my game on Google Play for a while now and the response has been very positive. It's currently rated 4.7 with over 1700 ratings. But over the last week or so, I've been getting either a 1 or 2 star rating every day. And none of them have any associated comments.

As you can see above, up until 1678 ratings I only had 23 x 1 stars and 8 x 2 stars. But over the last several days I've gotten several of them in succession.

I know it's only a few bad ratings and the sample size is currently too small to truly suggest anything, but I'm afraid this trend may continue over the next few days or even weeks which will drop my rating to 4.6 or even 4.5. Is there anything I can do about suspicious ratings (assuming this continues)?

NOTE: I haven't updated the app in a long time, so I haven't introduced crashes or anything that would cause people to be upset.

Yeah...seems like the Google Play update on the 10th of December has resulted in a lot of 1 star ratings for many people.

I just got another one today. It took over a year to get 22 one star ratings. And now I've gotten 5 in the last week. At this rate...my app is definitely going to fall to 4.6. Which really sucks because I feel that I've put in a lot of effort to achieve a 4.7 rating.

The December 10th update also halved my daily downloads.

The reason for is the new Google Play Store update for phones.

There's now a screen called "Rate this item to get recommendations". Here's the screenshot and the area encircled in red.

The system has two fatal flaws;
1. When you try to scroll the screen by dragging, if you touch any of the stars by mistake, it will automatically recognize the gesture as a touch instead of a drag, resulting in accidentally rating the application. If you're right handed, and dragging with your thumb, it probably means rating the application 1 or 2 stars by mistake. And as soon as you rate the application, the rating bar disappears, and reappears with another application rating request, making it inconvenient to fix the mistake you just did.
2. The name "Rate this item to get recommendations" is misleading. Even if the user likes the application, he/she may not want suggestions of similar applications, thus might be tempted to rate low to prevent getting similar suggestions. I had the same urge until I realized that I was actually rating the application, instead of just telling google "Dont suggest me things like this". If i didn't realize it, I'd have given the launcher theme an unfair 1 star rating. The average user probably won't notice that.

My game's rating fell from 4.37 to 4.31 in just 6 days, and is still dropping like crazy.

I was about to release another game on the store, but decided to wait until this shitstorm is over, so the new game won't have an average of 1.8 rating on the week it's released.

Good thinking Google, good thinking.

Yeah that might explain what is going on. I just can't imagine why I'm getting so many 1 stars all of a sudden when my app has been rated extremely well for over a year. It may even be that people are annoyed that Google is asking them to rate apps as it feels very spammy. My game has a "rate me" page that the user has to click to get to, but otherwise is completely unobtrusive. I took into account the possibility of pissing people off if I constantly ask them to rate my game.

Now...it seems that Google has done that for me. The worst part is that I don't think the "Rate me" dialog box ever disappears until you rate the app, at which time you are presented with another app to rate. People should be able to rate (or not rate) apps when they feel inclined. Not 9 months after uninstalling the app...and possibly not even remembering what the app was.

EDIT: Driant, my cumulative rating is exactly the same as yours starting from December the 10th. You'll notice that it was fairly consistent before then.

After trying to get decent ratings and helping everyone who has encountered an issue in the game, this feels like a real letdown.
Anyway, here's another thread where this is being discussed.

The fall continues. My game is over 1.5 years old on Google Play store, so the effects are showing rather slowly. I'm reading newer applications that fell from 4.5 to under 4.0 in two weeks.

And here's the current graph, down to 4.28 from 4.37.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fdg0c4zchxzrcn4/428.png

Out of the last 25 ratings with a comment the game has received, 22 is 5 star, and 3 is 4 star ratings.
But the 1 stars are increasing steadily, thanks to the suggestion box.

Interesting. We haven't seen that in our apps. I also have never seen that "Rate this app for recommendations" screen. I guess I am just lucky.
